When buying a basic sewing machine on this webshop you will also receive 10 size 18 needles. This thickness is suitable for all the nylon yarn and most of the polyester yarn we sell in this webshop.

For Serafil 20, which is a little thicker, we advise you to use needle size 20. If you yourself have thinner yarn, than you can choose a size 10 or 12. Be sure to use extra strong yarn to prevent breakage.

When working with thick and/or rough material (like a fire hose), you can use a size 20 to make the holes a little wider. This will make it easier for the yarn to slide through the material and it will prevent the formation of loops in your yarn.

For sewing biothane we advise you to use needle size 22. From experience we know you that thinner needles will not give you the desired result.

This webshop sells a number of types of yarn and thread, including Amann Serafil monofilament polyester yarn. Serafil-yarn 20 and 40 in our shop are water repellent. You can recognise this quality by the letters WR on the spool. This thread has a hydrophobic coating which helps to keep the seams waterproof.

When ordering Serafil yarn you can choose a limited number of colors. These are the colors we have in stock. Other colors or thicknesses can be ordered on request. Please send an email to info@leernaaimachine.nl if you wish to order something special.

Serafil 20 is the yarn we advise you to use. Serafil 30 and 40 and the other polyester and nylon threads are also very suitable to use on the sewing machine, but can handle a slightly smaller load.

Serafil 10 is a new product we sell in our shop and is now the thickest and strongest yarn to use on the machine. This yarn gives a stitching an extra nice thick look. The variety of colors for this product is still limited, but if you have special requests, we can always order it for you.
A problem you may have using very thick yarn is that you can only put a small amount of yarn on the bobbin. As a solution we advise you to use thinner yarn for that, for this yarn will not be visible on the front side of your work.

Preparing for the first use
When you receive the sewing machine, the flywheel and spool pin must be installed. ∙ Apply Vaseline in the tracks of the flywheel. Position the flywheel so that each arm runs in its own flywheel track. Make sure that the small notch on the shaft fits exactly into the recess of the flywheel. Tighten the self-locking nut: the flywheel, shaft and cams should have no play. You can stick a sticker with an arrow on the flywheel so that you know which direction to turn (clockwise).
∙ The moving parts must be lubricated regularly to keep the machine running smoothly and quietly. This increases the ease of use and extends the life of the machine.
∙ Move the foot upwards to avoid friction between the foot and the lower arm. Check that all screws are properly tightened. All moving parts must be lubricated. You can deduce whether the machine is functioning properly from the noise that the machine makes.

Removing the bobbin and bobbin case from the machine

∙ Move the needle into the highest position by using the flywheel.
∙ Move the foot up with the presser foot lever.
∙ Turn the bobbin cover/needle plate clockwise.
∙ Remove the bobbin and bobbin case with pliers or tweezers or use a magnet.

Winding a bobbin

∙ Turn the bobbin winder onto the flywheel.
∙ Take a bobbin and wind the desired thread around the bobbin several times. Hold the end. Then place the bobbin on the bobbin winder so that the thread will continue to be wound as soon as the flywheel is turned (always turn it clockwise). Place the spool in line with the bobbin winder and turn the flywheel to wind the bobbin. Make sure that the thread is wound evenly on the bobbin.
∙ Cut the thread when the bobbin is full enough. Take the bobbin from the bobbin winder and turn the bobbin winder away from the flywheel.

Inserting the upper thread

∙ Move the foot with the presser foot lever down.
∙ Place the spool on the spool pin.
∙ Feed the thread through the hole in the main needle drive rod (located at the mounting bolt).
∙ Then pass the thread through the first brake.
∙ The thread can optionally also be guided through the second brake for more thread tension. This is usually not necessary.
∙ Pass the thread through the thread guide from bottom to top and pass it under the main drive rod to the thread take-up lever.
∙ Pull the thread through the thread shaft (possibly with a getting-thread-through-needle-shaft-hook).
∙ Pass the thread through the eye of the needle and through the opening in the foot.
∙ Feel if the thread tension is sufficient.
∙ Replace the foot with the presser foot lever up.

Inserting the bobbin/lower thread

∙ Take the end of the thread and pull it from the inside out through the rightmost hole. Then pass the thread under the tab and pass the thread through the other hole (the right hole at the top of the bobbin case (as shown in the photo). Place the bobbin in the bobbin case. Check if the thread is not caught and the tension is sufficient.
∙ The tension can be adjusted by loosening or tightening the screw of the tab. For maximum thread tension (especially applicable for thin and smooth thread), use the two left holes of the bobbin case.
∙ Place the bobbin case with bobbin in the lower arm on the bobbin case holder.
∙ Run the wire over the notch of the lower arm.
∙ Close the bobbin cover.

∙ Hold the upper thread and turn the flywheel one whole round until the needle is back in the upper position. Then pull the upper thread so that it pulls the bobbin thread up with it. Now pull the bobbin thread further out of the lower arm (possibly you might need an awl) and guide it backwards.

Sewing the first stitches on a test piece

∙ Place the material to be sewn on the lower arm. Hold the lower and upper threads towards the back (towards the flywheel).
∙ Move the foot with the presser foot lever down.
∙ Turn the flywheel to experience stitch length and thread tension.

Martijn's tip: polishing
"I always had the same problem, namely that the metal surface was very rough, so that the leather got stuck and skewed. I have seen pictures on your site of whole scaffolding that provide easy transport. Which I can also recommend and is a little less invasive is to polish the metal surfaces with a chrome or metal polish. Then treat the surface with any car wax. Now things look and run much smoother, which makes the result better."Tip from Carolien: baking paper
For Carolien, polishing was not enough to be able to sew two pieces of skin (with the fur on the inside) neatly together. The top layer slid over the bottom layer, because the metal surface remained too stiff. Now she puts a sheet of baking paper between the leather sewing machine and the lower skin. Then she takes the leather between her left thumb and forefinger and holds tension on it as she turns the flywheel. Due to the smooth baking paper, the material now glides smoothly over the lower arm. Afterwards she tears the baking paper loose from the skin.

Below are some examples of users who have made a worktop or base for the leather sewing machine themselves.

To prevent the thread from getting caught, these users have come up with creative solutions.

Other practical tips that we've received from our customers over the years.

Do you also have a tip that can be helpful for other users, please mail or Whatsapp us (preferably with a photo), so we can place your tip on this page.

∙ Adapt the needle and thread thickness to the material that you want to sew.
∙ For thick and stiff material you need a thicker needle and thread. We advise you to use a needle size 20 with serafil yarn 20. In extreme cases you could use teflon spray on the yarn to make it run smoother through the material.

The upper thread snaps after just a few stiches.
Tilt the 'bird' a little forward (see picture on the right).

The upper thread snaps a the first stich or piles up at the bottom.
Probably your sewing machine isn't 'on time' anymore. Follow the picture manual to set the machine 'on time' again. An important advice for if you have the machine on time again: make sure the bobbin case holder always stays in place in the machine when you replace the bobbin.
If this solution doesn't fix your problem, then the needle is probably the cause. Replace the needle by a new, straight one.

The needle doesn't pull up the lower thread.
The machine isn't 'on time' anymore. Follow the picture manual to set the machine 'on time' again. An import advice for if you have the machine on time again: make sure the bobbin case holder always stays in place in the machine when you replace the bobbin.
Another cause for this problem may be that the needle doesn't get deep enough. You can easily check this by feeling with your finger at the bottom of the nose of the lower arm and turning the flywheel so that the needle gets in the lowest possible position. You should be able to just feel the needle with your finger. If you feel the needle very clearly or don't feel the needle at all, you must adapt the needle depth in the machine. Check this picture manual for how to do so.

The needle doesn't move forward.
Change the length of the stitching by turning the screw.

The needle does not go all the way down.
Check if the needle is still straight and fits through the hole in the shuttle bed. You probably need to replace the needle.

How do I replace a needle?
Make sure that the presser foot is down. Put the needle in the highest possible position. Loosen the screw of the needle clamp and remove the needle clamp together with the needle. Place a new needle with the flat side to the needle shaft. Place the needle clamp on the needle again en screw the needle head back to the machine. If you place a needle with a different length you might need to change the needle depth. How to do so, you can see in our picture manual.

I get loops on the bottom of the leather.
This means that the thread tension isn't correct. Lower the thread tension of the lower thread or increase the thread tension of the upper thread.I get loops on top of the leather.
This means that the thread tension isn't set correctly. Increase the thread tension of the lower thread or lower the thread tension of the upper thread.

How do I set the thread tension of the lower thread?
The lower thread tension is set by the tab on the bobbin. Fasten the tab a bit to increase the tension or loosen the tab to lower the tension.

How do I set the thread tension of the upper thread?
The upper thread tension is set by two thread break nuts on the right side of the machine. Mostly you only need to use and therefor turn one nut to change the thread tension.

As soon as we have received both the order and the payment, we will process your order. The same or next working day we give the package to the carrier. Depending on where you live, in Holland or abroad, your order will be delivered the next working day.The shipping costs are very high while ordering just some small products. Why is that?
It's very likely that you have ordered one or more spools of thread. These spools are too big to fit through a letter box. That's why they need to be send as a package causing the extra charges.I have received a track & tracenumber by mail but when I check this online I get an error message.
This problem occurs once in a while. Usually, the best solution is to wait one day and then try again. You can always contact us if you have questions about the delivery of your order.

Can I sew biothane with this machine?
Yes, from several experiences by our customers we know that de sewing machine can easily sew 3,6mm biothane. If you would like to know if your material is also suitable for our machine, please:∙ visit us in our stockroom in Emmeloord and try it yourself.
∙ send us a piece of your material and we will sew it together the way you desire. Afterwards we will return the sewn material to you.

Use of needles for biothane
For sewing biothane we advise you to use needles number 22.Up to what material thickness can the leather sewing machine sew material together?
Without making adjustments to the machine, you can sew up to 8 mm with a Basic model, up to 15 mm with a Shoe model and up to 17 mm with a One model. By opening the bobbin cover of the lower arm you get a little more space under the needle that will give you extra 2 mm (for supple leather).Working with saddle leather and other thick material
The leather sewing machine pushes its needle through thick layers of supple leather with ease. But sometimes the foot can then no longer make a stroke, so that the leather no longer moves. Here's a handy trick to be able to sew slightly thicker leather: open the bobbin cover of the lower arm.

Leernaaimachine.nl sells several types of thread. However we recommend you to use Amann Serafil monofilament polyester yarn because it is stronger.

All 20 and 40 Serafil yarn in our webshop are water reppelent. You can recognize this by the abbreviation WR on the spool.

Serafil 20 is the yarn we advise you to use on our Basic model. Serafil 40 and the other polyester and nylon threads are also very suitable to use on the sewing machine, but can handle a slightly smaller load.Serafil 10 (or thicker yarn) is only to be used on our Heavy Duty One and Shoe.

Serafil 8 is the thickest and strongest yarn to use on the machine.
